In case of Emergency:
How to turn any water softener off...
All professionally installed water softeners should have some type of by-pass valve.
The by-pass valve is located behind the water softeners control service where the water softener connects to the water pipes.  Unplugging a water softener will not prevent the water softener from using water.  You need to put the machine into by-pass.

To "by-pass" your softener:
Your softener should have one of the following types of "by-pass" valves:
By-pass lever:  Turn lever to the "by-pass" position
Push type by-pass:  Push and slide the button into the by-pass position
Twist valve by-pass:  Turn the dials to the by-pass position

*If you water softener is leaking water and the by-pass is stuck or does not shut-off the flow of water to the softener you may need to shut off the water to the entire house and call us for service.
Important:  Unplugging a water softener Does Not turn the water softener off!

General Information about your water softener:

  • Which type of salt should I buy? Our water softeners use extra course solar crystals or solar salt.  (If you are buying the Morton's brand it is the blue bag).  Do not use rock salt or pellets.

  • Why is my Softener regenerating in the middle of the day?  If you have the Odyssey 5600 and your water softener is regenerating any time other than between the hours of 2am-5am you will need to adjust the time of day on your water softener.

  • Do I need to make adjustments to my Millennium EDS System? The Millennium has a battery back-up and should not require adjustments.  To change the time of day...detailed instructions can be found under the cover or...Call us!

  • Do I need to make adjustments to my Marquis Twin System? The Marquis will regenerate at different times of the day and night.  No adjustments necessary.  If you have any questions...Call us!

  • My water feels too soft.  Soft water is water free of hardness minerals.  When you water has hardness the soap and detergents will curd with the minerals leaving a film on your skin, hair and fixtures.  With soft water the soap and detergents rinse free leaving only your natural oils which makes your skin and hair feel slippery or silky.  If you are using too much soap or detergents it can be difficult to rinse all the soap free.  You will want to cut back on your detergents and bath products.  With soft water you will cut your soap use in half!

  • I have a water softener but my dishes have a film.  If the film wipes off pretty easily you are using too much soap.  Do not put detergent in the pre-wash cup and only use 1 detergent tablet (we recommend Electrosol tabs) or 1/2 the recommended liquid.  If your glasses have a rainbow effect then your water may be too hot.

  • I adjusted my soap and I still have a stubborn film.  If the film requires a strong cleanser or vinegar to remove then your water softener is not working properly.  Follow the steps below.

  • My water softener is not working.  Here are a few things you can check:

To set the time of day on the Odyssey 560:
With your right "thumb" Press in the red button and hold it in.  This releases the cam and allows you to rotate the dial with your middle finger so the time of day changes in the window on the front of the controller.  The time shown on the controller should always reflect the "current" time.
  • Test the outlet. Test the outlet the softener is plugged into with something like a blow dryer to see if the outlet is actually working.

  • If the outlet is not working most likely it is a GFI. You will need to find the outlet with the GFI "reset" and reset the power.

  • If the outlet is working,  then check for a "salt bridge".  A salt bridge occurs when the salt at the bottom of the salt tank wicks up water and forms a solid compact layer.  It creates a "bridge" above the water.  You softener may be cycling as normal, but with the water not coming into contact with the salt it can not produce brine and therefore cannot cleanse the media to produce softened water.

  • To get rid of a salt bridge:  Move the salt out of the way until you get to the compact layer.  You will need to use a broom handle or something like it to break apart the hard layer of salt.  Remove the large chunks and get rid of them.  Caution:  There is a white grid platform at the bottom of every salt tank.  You will want to be careful not to bust through the platform.
