How does a water softener work?
Soft water out
What is Hard Water?
As water flows through the ground layers it dissolves rock and minerals before it collects in the aquifer or well.  These dissolved minerals are better known as calcium and magnesium.  The amount of dissolved minerals determines how hard your water is.
Example of hard water residue left from one gallon of water at 20 grains of hardness.
Example of a pipe cut-out where the hard water build-up coated the pipes reducing the water flow and water pressure.
Why is my water hard?

The Hydrologic Cycle
How hard is my water?

Soft Water...............less than 1 grain per gallon
Slightly Hard..................1 to 3 grains per gallon
Moderately Hard............3 to 7 grains per gallon
Hard Water..................7 to 10 grains per gallon

Hard water  goes in
Regeneration Cycle:
To wash off the hard water minerals from the resin, a salt water brine from the brine tank is injected into the softener.  The hard water ions are exchanged with sodium ions and the hardness is rinsed down the drain.

Every time you turn
a faucet on in your home...
After going through the softener...

soft water comes out
Technically speaking...

Softening your water:
Hard water fills the tank.  As it passes through the resin, the hard water ions are attracted to the resin beads like a magnet.  By the time the water gets to the bottom of the tank, it's soft.
